Obituary for Gloria Katherine Humphrey (Thomsen)

Gloria Katherine Humphrey passed away on September 9th, 2020 in Reseda, California at the age of 94. Gloria was born on October 28, 1925 in Lake Preston, South Dakota to Peter and Marie Thomsen (Hasselhop). Gloria grew up on a farm during the Great Depression and experienced firsthand the terrible dust storms that plagued the mid-west in the 1930s. She attended a one-room schoolhouse for 8 years and graduated from Lake Preston High School in 1943. After graduation, she moved to Sioux Falls where she attended Nettleton Business College and then worked at John Morrell for 2 ½ years. She worked with the first IBM machines during her employment there. During this time she met Walter Humphrey, a WWII serviceman stationed in Sioux Falls. They later married and moved first to Maine then to San Fernando Valley, California in 1952. She lived in the same house from 1953 until her passing and had many kind and generous neighbors who assisted her often in her later years and for whom she was deeply grateful. Gloria worked at Pierce Junior College for many years before retiring in 1987. She was an active gardener, loved to cook, participated in many church and school activities when her children were young, and greatly enjoyed caring for several Scottish Terriers. Gloria was well known for her quick mind, her kind and thoughtful treatment of others, and love of family. She is survived by one daughter, Toniann, two grandsons, Mike and Andy, and two great grandsons, Collin and Tyler, all of Virginia, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son Larry, her parents, 2 sisters, Rose and Violet, and 2 brothers, Jasper and Henning. Gloria was interred in a private ceremony at Lake Preston cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice.
